MERRY CHRISTMAS

The Christmas presents have been wrapped and opened. The family get togethers are winding down and while it is great to be together there is one thing I miss. The time to enjoy it all. I remember when we had the whole Christmas break to do nothing more than to wait with great anticipation and enjoy the days after.

The memory of those things we did as a family are fresh in my memory more so than the gifts received. From driving to the Christmas tree lot to pick out a real tree, decorating the tree with tinsel, cutting and pasting construction paper garland and stringing the big bulb color Christmas tree lights. I think one year we even did the popcorn garland. There were the Christmas shows which we watched together and the ceremonial hanging of our stockings by the fireplace then thinking you would never fall asleep that night.

It seemed that we had more white Christmas's. There were the endless hours of igloo and snow fort building and the seasonal lobbing of ice crystal laden snowballs at the opposing fort. Sledding occurred wherever there was the slightest hill. The test of our manliness (errr actually our boyness) was whether you could jump back in to our still wet from yesterday (but slightly warmer) winter gear and go back out and add an addition to the igloo.

The snow covered ground brought a bit of peace to the outside and an appreciation for the warmth inside.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby,
keeping watch over their flocks at night.
An angel of the Lord appeared to them,
and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid.
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
This will be a sign to you:
You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger."
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel,
praising God and saying, Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."
