THE HAMMERED DULCIMER

The Arkansas Traveler, the Mississippi River Waltz, Shenandoah are some of my favorites on the hammered dulcimer. Pictured above is Greg Becker of the Homestead Pickers at Silver Dollar City. Greg is most often seen behind the bass with the harmonica around his neck but his trademark is the hammered dulcimer.

The hammered dulcimer is a stringed musical instrument with strings stretched over the sounding board (two string for every note if I'm not mistaken). The strings are struck with two small mallet hammers -- one in each hand. Imagine playing the piano by opening the top and then using just two sticks to strike the strings (ok not practical but it gives you an idea of the skill required to play the dulcimer).

If you like the music of the hammered dulcimer (or if you have never heard the hammered dulcimer) you can purchase Greg's CD at the www.homesteadpickers.com website.
